The Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader program is a commercially produced, computer-based test system for evaluating the comprehension level of a student reader. Students read books on their reading level then take a brief test on the computer to determine how well they have understood what has been read.

Accelerated Reader book levels are subject to change without our knowledge. We try our best to keep up with these changes to maintain up-to-date records.

The school's test list fills a binder that sits on the circulation desk. For that reason it is updated every year. This website however attempts to maintain current tests and accurate book levels on a constant basis.

The following files are collective lists of Accelerated Reader tests that Henderson also has the books for. The first file is organized alphabetically by book title. The second file is organized by book level.

Virginia Readers' Choice Books for 2008-09

Each year the Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) selects several books at the Primary, Elementary, Middle, and High School levels as part of their Virginia Readers' Choice program (formally known as the Virginia Young Readers program). During the school year students read the books listed for their levels and early in the spring vote for their favorite book.  These votes from across the state are tabulated to identify the top books in each category. Two of the most prominent awards are the Randolph Caldecott Medal, and the John Newbery Medal. The Randolph Caldecott Medal is given each year for outstanding illustration in children's picture books.  The John Newbery Medal is given to recognize outstanding writing in books for older children.

The 2006 Caldecott Award was given to The Hello, Goodbye Window illustrated by Chris Raschka and written by Norton Juster.

The 2006 Newbery Award went to Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins.
